    Dr Jason Fung has stated that the human body doesn't know what a calorie is. No offense coach Greg, but I believe him over you. The first law of thermodynamics doesn't apply to the human body but gets tossed around a lot because people think it makes them sound smart. The human body has different hormonal reactions based on the quality of food ingested. Hence the quality of a persons diet being more important than caloric consumption.

    I started eating oatmeal for breakfast spinach and chicken for lunch and dinner and I been dropping alot of weight but I'm not sure if it's from no pizza and lots of spinach or not drinking energy drinks wit h have 240 calories each witch I was having 3 a day .idk but I felt like shit and now on week 3 I feel much better I have always lifted weights but now seems like it's making a difference. It suvks being hungry or watching my coworkers at the hospital all order tacos and I'm eating spinach and chicken man them tacos let me just watch you but seems like after the first few weeks it's something I can stay with thanks for being so inspiring couch Greg

    Why don’t they define a “nutritional calorie” vs a traditional thermal calorie? Like protein has 3cal/gram (instead of 4) if they’re saying that the body doesn’t absorb/use them the same. Keep it simple lol

    Coach Greg I guess this is one of those .4% of the times when you are wrong. All calories ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL. Wait before you yell and scream. isn't your book's main selling point is basically saying the same thing? Low dense calorie food vs high dense calorie food. Yes the amount of calories are the same but those calories were NOT created equally. Meaning the argument is not about the definition of calories "which is the energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 kilogram of water by 1 °C " but rather what it took to produce them "hence the not CREATED equally part". You can consume 1500 calories of diet "A" and get mainly fats and carbs and very little vitamins and nutrients, and still be hungry all the time, or consume diet "B" a balanced meal that's composed of all the healthy vitamins and nutrients you need, and if we were to use your cook book then we'll even be able to eat a larger amount of food and feel fuller longer and not get hungry as much and as a bonus might turn that diet into a sustainable pattern of healthy choices that can be practiced forever rather then just a tool to lose weight and go back to doing that we did before hands. "YoYo dieting" You argued that "all calories are equal" but misinterpreted the statement you quoted which said "created" equal. Two very different things.

    I would argue with that opening statement, that the calories in calories out, knowing 3500 cal equals 1 pound of fat even, is not common knowledge. The more common thing I hear coming out of the fitness and diet industry, is eat this food and lose weight, or how I lost 20 pounds eating only avocados, or some dumb shit like that. I feel that Harvard’s title is actually not accurate, as the people I know that are always trying to lose weight don’t know the science behind it, and that’s the issue. I got my two aunts to start tracking their food and macros in the lose it app. They’ve lost almost 20 pounds each since November. And they weren’t super unhealthy like a lot of people, they ate fairly clean, they just didn’t know how much sugar and calories were in certain foods, say certain fruits. Unless someone has disordered thinking or behavior around food, I think most people should track once in their life just to get an idea of basic nutrition and their own individual needs.

    Lmfaooo yes your former teacher either asked the wrong question or misled the class. Mass does not equal weight. Density, volume, buoyancy and gravity plays a huge role as to why a lb of lead is technically“heavier” than a lb of feathers. So she should have explained in details with what she meant with “heavier” if she expected a nuanced answer. Just like Harvard trying to misled people by “debunking” calories in and calories out by beating around the bush.

    My two cents which nobody asked for, is that both extremes are wrong. The basis is calories in calories out. All diets follow the same basic laws of thermodynamics and i don't believe this is debatable. However, the body is also not this simple. All calories are created equal, but your body does not absorb all calories with equal efficiency, depending on your respective digestive system. Different people will have different levels of different enzymes and microbes, which leads to different total absorption from different foods. For example, someone who can't produce as much bile for whatever reason will not be able to digest as much fat. And thus will shit out more of that stick of butter than someone who produces more bile. In extreme cases of inefficient digestion, you'll get diarrhea. And furthermore, some compounds in some food sources will effect your appetite. For example, refined sugar will make you feel hungrier faster due to it's effects on insulin levels. While high fiber carb sources and proteins will keep you feeling more full for longer due to their slower digestion. So you should not just totally disregard what foods you eat. Calories in calories out is still the iron rule of all functional diets, but through a process of personal experimentation you should find out which foods your body seems to digest effectively, and which foods keep you from feeling hungry again for longer. The reason some people are fat, and some people are not. Is that some people stumbled into eating the correct foods for their bodies, which make it easy to eat the correct amount for them intuitively. Whilst other stumbled into the wrong foods for their bodies, which make it easy to eat too much for their bodies intuitively. And since 95% of people don't have the self discipline to ignore their hunger and cravings, the latter group will struggle to maintain a healthy bodyweight, unless they switch to foods that better match their digestive system. Just to make things even more clear, no one diet works equally well for everybody. And anyone who tells you there is only one right way to eat is simply ignorant, willfully or otherwise. Some people will respond extremely well to a high meat diet, others will respond equally well to a high plant diet, and still others will respond well to a diet with both but not either one and these are not the only 3 options either.

    The fact that they want to tell me that they can stuff their body full of fat and then somehow be magically more efficient at converting calories than an athlete? How? How can they get more work out of their lets say 600 kcal than me? Isnt that superior even? I eat 600 kcal and can run less or slower or not as long as the fat guy or the guy who has to take meds? This is stupid beyond belief. Fat people that are over 200 lbs non muscular physique HAVE to eat at least 4000 to 5000 kcal a day to stay at that wheight. Its not like you eat fatty stuff for some years, gain wheight and stay at that wheight if you shift back to a normal/healthy diet. I would love to have a show like Big Brother where we can observe what those people that claim to have tried every diet and so on eat everyday. I would guess this would expose it. Everybody is supposed to eat only 1800 kcal a day for 3 weeks. There is only two scenarios; they either lose weight or they fail by eating more than 1800 kcal a day. There is no one who can prove 24/7 monitored for 3 weeks that he/she wont lose weight if they eat only 1800 kcal a day. They all talk but dont act on it because we dont monitor them 24/7. Fat people eat to many calories. Peter Pan out.

    1st law of thermodynamics states, *Energy of a closed system is constant.* Now lets look at a Mathematical derivation and illustration: 1st law of thermodynamics: Total energy-in = total energy output. Let's make lean body mass, the reference isolated system. Moreover, let's breakdown the total energy-in into two main energy compoments. However, The total energy output wont be broken down for simplicity. *food energy-in + accumulation/consumption = total energy output.* Rearranging the above equation *accumulation/consumption = total energy output - total food energy* Ladies and gentlmen, the above equation is the calories-in, calories-out that is used by calorie calculators. Let's look at 3 examples: 1. Maintanance *total work-out = total food energy* Ans is zero. *The body Doesnt lose or gain any excess mass.* 2. Surplus *total work-out < total food energy* Accumulation/generation = +ve value. Simply the equation becomes _"Accumulation."_ The body saves excess energy in the form of fat as survival mechanism and gains muscle if necessary muscle stimulus is introduced. 3. Deficit *total work-out > total food energy* Accumulation/generation = -ve value. Simply the equation becomes _"generation."_ The body uses energy from stored fat and catabolises as means to lower the overall maintainance if necessary muscle stimulus is not introduced. Note: the above derivation is a macroscopic take on the process of losing/gaining weight. Those who say calories in and calories out doesnt work. May be attributed to the mistakes you surely pointed out. As an engineer, Dr Greg your information is spot on my guy.

    There was a recent study done giving one group food with fat high in polyunsaturated fatty acids and the other group fat high in steric acid. Both groups were at a deficit and calories were constant. The steric acid group lost more weight faster than the PUFA group. Steric acid signals fat cells to release fat while PUFAs signal fat cells to accumulate. So a calorie isn't necessarily just a calorie.

    Unless we define terms and goals then this discussion makes no sense. I would think that gaining lean body mass is different than making a specific weight for a boxing fight. Training with weights is better for body metabolism than cardio. Proper diet can improve your metabolism if you can control insulin release. Many people are diabetic or prediabetic and resolving this issue is at the core of achieving lean body mass. We can also duplicate what bodybuilders facing contest do and take TRT and anabolic steroids that don't cause water retention. Some people ma need ketogenic diet to get there. Calorie deficit and calorie is a calorie ideas are old clichés. Low fat diet doesn't build lean body mass. Higher fat diet doesn't make you fat.

    Actually a lb of lead would hurt more because in terms of surface area, the lead would have a much lower total surface area which means the point of impact would be more defined than a pound of feathers, which likely would have a much much larger surface area and therefore the impact is spread out upon more nerve cells, therefore nullifying the pain.

    I just also love how all the bro scientists go to extremes to prove a point. Like oh yeah me wanting to have a piece of pie once a day for desert is the same as going to an all sugar diet. If calories are in check, rest of diet is in check, and workload is in check that one piece of pie honestly is minuscule.

    When he mentioned 50% BF that hit me because I'm 51% yet you wouldn't believe me if I told you I am not typically hungry and can survive on one meal a day. The reason I am so fat is because I love junk food and I eat a lot of it and drink a lot of soda. I lack the willpower, motivation and discipline to eat healthy and to work out.

It's word games, but word games can't change the laws of physics. “Different foods get absorbed differently.” -=[translation]=> “You're not actually _getting_ all the calories.” Real life is not anime. Humans can't create energy out of nothing. If you're at a deficit, you _will_ use up your reserves. You have no choice in the matter. It's _physics._

    just because lowering your calories intake makes you loose weight does mean that Is the best way moving forward. you need to be promoting the most optimal macronutrient ratios and the human species appropriate diet. you promote a standard American diet just with less calories that is dead wrong for optimal human health.
